Wieder zu Hause – Back Home

After a long flight home, the German Exchange for 2024 comes to an end.
We’d like to thank our partner teachers Frau Herberhold and Frau Wallmeier at the Marienschule for their phenomenal work. If they had not been so willing to start the program with us again, it simply would not have happened. Our deepest thanks to the families who hosted our students and their generosity.

As the holidays creep closer, a short video to highlight the amazing time our group had in Germany. We’re so thrilled we could experience it with you, and know if will be a lifelong memory.

Berlin Beginnings

Here in Berlin, different students are in charge our organiser for the day. Students finalise the itinerary the night before with the teachers and then lead the group from attraction to attraction, giving everyone background information on the different sights and making sure everyone gets on and off at the right station. They also make sure everyone is well-fed so they need to find restaurants for us for dinner and lunch. Kira, Atoosa and Liam were up first and they did an amazing job – this was a great day. Here is their summary of it!

On Monday the 9th of December our group spent the first full day in Berlin. Our adventure began with a delightful buffet breakfast at the hotel before we prepared for the day ahead.

Our first activity was to return to the Brandenburg Gate and surrounding area for more photos and sightseeing. With the assistance of Mr Smith’s facts, we learnt more about the history of the Berlin Wall and the surrounding national embassies.

We continued by making our way to the Memorial for Murdered Jews of Europe, a meaningful art piece dedicated to the Jewish victims during the Holocaust. The memorial’s tall stone pillars brought feelings of isolation and remembrance to the students, further highlighting the devastating events of the Second World War.

Our journey continued with a visit to the Ampelmann (traffic light man) store and a train ride to the famous Alexanderplatz and TV Tower. We took a quick trip to DM, our favourite pharmacy and one-stop shop for everything, then viewed some of the square’s landmarks such as the world clock and the Christmas market. We then took a claustrophobic elevator ride up to the top of the TV Tower and enjoyed scenic views of the city. Students ate a quick lunch at the square before our surprise booking on the other side of the city.

Another train ride later and we were in Tempelhof, the location of a former airport (basically a massive field). Our surprise activity was renting bikes and exploring the old airport’s massive takeoff zones and other nearby spots such as the community garden.

The group then took the train back toward the hotel for a rest and dinner period. Students split into groups to spend time exploring Berlin’s diverse cuisine, resting up for our final activity of the day.

We regrouped after our delicious dinner and hopped on another train toward the Konzerthalle Berlin. Our final activity of the day was a lovely performance from the Hanns Eisler School of Music’s chamber orchestra. The orchestra’s beautifully played classical pieces and the concert hall’s amazing architecture brought a great, classy finish to our first day in Berlin before we headed back to the hotel for a well-earned rest.

Departing Lippstadt

Sunday morning: Everyone and their host families arrived at Lippstadt station at 9:00 am to say goodbyes and for the exchange students to head to Berlin. There was a mix of emotions, along with lots of tears and hugs between the exchange students, host parents and siblings. Sincere goodbyes and promises to stay in contact as our host families waved us off as the train doors closed and we rode off on our way to Hamm. High on emotions, everyone talked about their last day with host family.

The train ride to Hamm was a quick 30 minute trip to the station, the train mostly empty and peaceful gave everyone a chance to slowly calm themselves and breath. Once we arrived at Hamm station we made our way to the next train to Berlin. Everyone worked together (well mainly Dane was forced encouraged) to carry the heavier luggage up and down the large number of stairs so we could get to our next platform for our train as some was just too difficult to carry on our own. As our train arrived, we made our way on, piling the bigger luggage in the luggage areas while smaller bags were placed at our feet or above us on the railings. We made ourselves comfortable for the long 3 hour trip ahead of us. Not long into the ride the boys suggested playing among us, which most people decided to join in on, including Mr Smith. We played a few rounds before everyone went back to doing their own things, at one point the train was going over 250km/h and before we knew it we had arrived at berlin.

Exiting the train, we took in the surroundings of the bustling Berlin station, with people everywhere and many levels going down underground. We used the elevator to get down to the floor we needed to, Mr Smith went off to buy us transportation tickets while the group naughtily sang Christmas songs perhaps a little too loudly, along with some other random ones, we were quickly silenced from a look from Frau Bruns. We waited (un)patiently for Mr Smith to come back with our tickets and as soon as he did, we headed off. We took another train closer to our hostel and from there we walked to Aletto and checked in. The girls went into their room as did the boys and everyone unpacked, claimed beds and got ready for what we were going to see later that evening.

Grabbing our passports, phones, jackets and room card we head down two flights of stairs to meet our teachers in the lobby. Once everyone was there and ready we left the hostel and caught a bus to the Reichstag building, passing multiple landmarks along the way. Once we arrived, everyone stopped to stare and appreciate the old beautiful buildings, after too many photos, selfies and attempts of trying to do a TikTok, the teachers lead us to a smaller separate building right near it for a security check. We showed our passports and they checked us off before we went through a metal detector and our phones and jackets were placed onto a plastic tray like at the airports. After passing through security, our group followed a staff member to the building where we had to patiently wait for one door to shut before another opened leading us into the actual building due to security. Once inside the building we sat down on some couches and waited for our tour to begin. We met our posh speaking guide as she toured as around the Reichstag, frequently using words like “propose” and “observe”. Although it was quite humorous, the tour of the Reichstag was interesting as we got to see the graffiti from the Russians’, Olaf Schultz office door (unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to go inside) and visited the dome at the top where we made a TikTok in front of one of the German flags, explored the view and history of the dome.

After an interesting and fun time at the Reichstag, we headed out of the building to grab some dinner. We decided on Vapiano, a tasty pizza and pasta restaurant nearby. Ording in small groups, we then headed upstairs to wait for our food while everyone chatted among themselves. Soon enough, everyone’s food arrived and we dug in, most enjoying their pasta while others savoured their pizza. After everyone had finished their meals, Frau Bruns and Mr Smith came to join us at our table, asking us what our 2 DMs were and 1 priceline (two lows and a high, because DM is life). We shared our thoughts with the group then finally headed back to our hostel. By the time we arrived everyone was exhausted and went straight to bed, and that was our first day in Berlin!

Week 2

Tuesday: After a very, long, enjoyable, eventful day in Düsseldorf on the Monday, we had a day at school to reset and spend time with our host families. Some of us had been treated with trips around Lippstadt and beyond, baking Christmas biscuits and some of us even saw snow!

Wednesday: Wednesday brought a lot of fun and deliciousness for us as we did the first hour at school with Mr Smith and Ms Burns then we headed off to a very exciting activity. We all took the bus after a fair wait with the unreliable transport to Lippstadt. Where we all shopped around and grabbed some lunch and tried to find a warm place to sit for two hours. After we gathered around and found out the boys got questioned by the police for their presence outside the Rolex store, we were able to brush that off and catch a bus to our next destination. We reached our stop and had a short walk to Peter’s chocolate factory! We were all in awe of its similarity to Charlie and the chocolate factory. Unfortunately our tour did not have as many surprises as Wonka gave, however we did learn a lot and ate a lot while completing activities and finding out where the real magic happens. Although having the tour in German, we were able to catch on to common words such as ‘Schokolade’ and ‘Schokie’ which unsurprisingly popped up a lot! After our tour, we treated ourselves with chocolate from the shop and headed back to Lippstadt to go back to school and enjoy the rest of the afternoon with our families. Herr Smith and Frau Bruns would like to add that they are happy that the tour was not like Wonka’s, as they’d quite like to return to Australia with all of the students in their care.

Thursday and Friday: For the rest of the week we continued going to school and were able to understand our way around and somewhat learn a bit more in class grasping onto new words and concepts every day. We then enjoyed different activities after school, such as sightseeing, sports and meeting up with grandparents for lunch. On Friday, many went to watch soccer whilst others went to ice hockey, which was enjoyable to enjoy the intense crowds and talented sports. We are all feeling very spoiled by our host families!

Saturday and Sunday

Overall, we enjoyed our weekend travelling to new cities and even new countries, whilst spending even more time with family and friends!

On Saturday I went to Köln with Liam which was quite the experience! After a long 2 hour drive where my knees were feeling as if they were jelly – After getting up and cracking all my bones we went to the Kölner Dom view which is a tower where we got to see Köln in all its glory, we also saw 3 nuclear plants which was a bit of a shock. There are only three active plants in Germany now, but still seeing them was a bit of a shock considering we don’t have them in Australia. After that we headed to the Padlock bridge where we saw thousands of padlocks from lovers!

Düsseldorf

On the 25th of November everyone met at the Lippstadt train station for our outward journey to Düsseldorf. Our day began with a few delays on the train line, but an arrival in Düsseldorf around 11:45 AM. What was supposed to be a simple U-Bahn trip three stations up the line ended up with not one, not two, but three different splinter groups occurring as the group was accidentally separated. Not to worry! A quick trip in the other direction resulted in the group being reunited and a tour of Düsseldorf with our tour guide, who we’ll admit, often said “there’s an interesting story about that… but we don’t have time for it”.

The tour was educational and we learnt about many of the old beer breweries, as well as passing a shop that sold over 25 different kinds of potatoes. Need a potato? They have got you covered! The most interesting that was learnt from Düsseldorf was about the flood lines. Over the last few hundred years there have been several major floods that raised to above 2 metres of normal water level, causing the city to rebuild their roads to better be safe for any future floods. As a group we visited the streets of Düsseldorf with expensive shops and a lovely river. Near by was a building covered in greenery that if in a line, would span 8km! As well as an architecturally flawless building called the ‘Libeskind House’, filled with offices and consists of 2,800 horizontal, vertical and curving elements! Afterwards, we continued onto lunch after and had delicious burgers and new drinks.

There were different Fanta and coke flavours, that were produced by two brothers who found a way to continue producing drinks after the loss of ingredients in world war 2. A yummy lunch was what we needed to continue on sightseeing and shopping in Düsseldorf! Where some bought Fortnite Lego and collectors items, visited toy and department stores. Others visited the Christmas markets which were not to the standard expected, however the cinnamon rolls were a hit from cinnamood. The melt able dough and delicious toppings that just melt in your mouth started to become something to watch out for doom scrolling! The teachers were very much impressed by the quality of the coffee and comparison to their favourite coffee shops in Melbourne. After the delicious food, sightseeing and shopping it was time to head back, where this time there were delays, however no one was lost or separated this time and we even got to travel on a double decker train! Which were incredibly enthused by! After a long eventful day it was time for us to wind down and get ready for the next day of school.

The First Week Continued

Day 3:

Another early morning, we met all together with Mr Smith and Ms Bruns to discuss our first thoughts and feelings of Germany. We shared experiences and activities such as meeting new people and enjoying sports like handball. Until the end of the school day, we were once again lost puppies and tried to grasp onto every word of our teachers and fellow students. We all finished the school day and headed by public bus to Lippstadt, the town centre that the villages surround. We had the privilege of meeting the Mayor and completing a tour of the beautiful historical town with our tour guide, Susanne. We wandered the streets with apples and enjoyed traditional and delicious meals as we were all a bunch of fun-guys at the Shankhaus Diva.

Day 4 and 5:

The weekend consisted of snow and mountain ranges for some, and new foods, culture and activities for others. Everyone is embracing the new world around them and enjoying their time in Germany with good people and amazing times! Many experiences of the weekend included myself visiting and enjoyed the beautiful sky walk in Willingen and wonderful views of the snow and a traditional currywurst with a warm hot chocolate. Kiera educated herself with three different museums and one with Atoosa where they saw a painting that we had all studied in English, with her teacher being very impressed. Atoosa also made pizza with her host sibling and some friends! Lachie did a lot of sightseeing and visited surrounding villages to get a feel of the German way, whereas, Liam enjoyed and celebrated time with his host family visiting a few breweries which were local historical landmarks. However, Ananya enjoyed a play of Cinderella which was performed on horses! Kaya and Vivaan also enjoyed Willingen where Vivaan though it had a “pretty epic view” and mentioned it was “pretty sick (Dane)” he also had a snow ball fight. Not  very similarly, Kaya made and “interesting snowman” and made cool snow angels. Dane, on the other hand went with Kyla to Bielefeld where they walked around a shopping centre before having a fancy dinner with a long pizza, which I assume they very much enjoyed! Kyle also tried pausstechlätzchen ehich he stated as “very yummy, very sweet“. However, we cannot forget the teachers, as Mr Smith accidentally saw a king fisher which made Ms Burns very jealous! But she was able to visit Family which she hadn’t seen in three years which she described as “it was sick”!

That mostly sums up week 1, on to week 2! See you then!

Our First Days

‘Wow!’ is an understated way to describe the first week in Germany! For the majority of us it was our first time in Germany, let alone Europe. In these first days there have been many firsts including snow, German school and of course, the culture.

Day 1:

We all started our first day with a big sleep in to recover from the jet lag and started to connect with our families. For some of us new food such as bratwurst was tried and for others it was exploring the villages they are located in. It was a big surprise when it was pitch black by 5pm but it was just something to get used to. A big sleep after a welcoming day was well-needed for the first day of school.

Day 2:

More surprises occurred, and many culture shocks arose, with the 8am school morning start and 1pm finish. Classes were a pile of confusion, but we all smashed English which gave us confidence. We all followed our host siblings like little puppies until we found our feet around the school and began to understand. Something crazy I realised on my first day was that everyone seemed to have a real interest in the classes, and participation was of a high standard. I then found out that this was because students also receive a grade for participation, which explained the enthusiasm everyone seemed to have for school. Day 2 also brought new fun with trying and watching new sports, meeting grandparents and doing some more exploring!

Day three involved a tour of the city and other wonderful experiences, but more on that in our next post!

We’re Back! Wir sind wieder da!

After 6 years we are excited to announce that Box Hill High School has arrived safe and sound in Lippstadt, Germany.

It’s always a long journey, which requires a lot of patience from our students, and Herr Smith and I are so impressed with how organised, orderly, polite and considerate all students were through three airports and two lengthy flights. We can already tell this is a very special and wonderful group and we cannot wait to see what Germany has to offer for us.

After our extended group check-in at Melbourne airport we were excited to start our journey to Germany. After we took our first group photo, it was then time to say our goodbyes to our families. Some eyes got a little bit “sweaty”, but we were too busy to dwell on our mixed emotions and it was all to exciting going through security, passport control, finding snacks, setting up e-sims, and buying last souvenirs before we were off to Doha. We travelled with the night, meaning that it was dark on the plane for almost the entire time – the perfect conditions for a good snooze for some and movie marathons for others before we were greeted by the most beautiful sunrise above Hamad International Airport, Qatar. We had a two hour stopover we used stretching our legs, enjoying more snacks and exploring the busy airport. Once we sat down on the next plane, Germany started feeling a lot closer, as all of the announcements were in German as well and it was only (!) another 6 hours to Düsseldorf.

Touching down in Düsseldorf was nice and easy, we cleared customs quick and efficiently and collected our bags in no time. Another two hours on the Autobahn before we were met by our host families in Lippstadt, but not before another stop at a small shop to buy German snacks and drinks like Haribo, Kinderschokolade, Brezel and Mezzo Mix. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we walked back to the bus – it had started snowing! What an exciting hello from the weather gods here in Germany for us. One student exclaimed: “This is my first snow!” We are sure it’s the first of many firsts here in Germany.

Bis bald!

Back to Melbourne

This post has been scheduled to go live while we’re on our flights back to Melbourne. So that students, families, Box Hill and the Marienschule have a little memory of our time in Germany we have prepared a short video.

Although we will be back home soon enough we hope that you enjoy this video and get a bit more of an insight into just how much the group has experienced and learned in the past month.
